Framingham, located in Middlesex County and the MetroWest subregion of the Greater Boston metropolitan area, was incorporated as a town in 1700 and became a city on January 1, 2018. The area that would become Framingham was originally inhabited by the Nipmuc people, who established encampments near Farm Pond and practiced hunting, fishing, and agriculture. European settlement began in 1647 when John Stone established a farm on the Sudbury River. The town was eventually named Framlingham after Thomas Danforth's English hometown, though the reason the "L" was later dropped remains unknown. During the Revolutionary War, Framingham sent approximately 130 militia members to the Battles of Lexington and Concord in April 1775. From 1854 to 1865, the town served as a gathering place for the abolitionist movement, hosting annual Independence Day rallies where prominent figures like William Lloyd Garrison, Sojourner Truth, and Henry David Thoreau spoke. Framingham is home to the renowned Framingham Heart Study and was historically significant as the home of the Dennison Manufacturing Company, founded in 1844. Today, the city has developed a substantial Brazilian American population since the 1980s, representing one of the largest such communities in the United States.
