Littleton is a town in Grafton County, New Hampshire, situated at the northern edge of the White Mountains and bounded on the northwest by the Connecticut River. According to the 2020 census, the town had a population of 6,005, with 4,467 people living in the main village, a census-designated place centered on the intersection of U.S. Route 302 and New Hampshire Route 116 along the Ammonoosuc River.
The area, originally called Chiswick, was settled in 1769 and initially part of Lisbon before being granted as Apthorp in 1770 to honor George Apthorp, head of a wealthy Boston mercantile establishment. The town received its present name in 1784, the same year New Hampshire became a state, honoring Colonel Moses Little, who had received the land through associates from Newburyport, Massachusetts, and served as Surveyor of the King's Woods. Littleton's industrial heritage includes the Littleton Grist Mill, which first opened in 1798 on the banks of the Ammonoosuc River and has been fully restored to its original appearance. Between 1867 and 1909, the Kilburn Brothers factory became known for publishing photographs and stereoviews, the double-picture viewers popular during the Victorian era. Today, Littleton remains accessible via three exits from Interstate 93, with U.S. Route 302 running through the town center as Main Street.
