Lisbon is a town in Grafton County in southwestern New Hampshire, with a population of 1,621 according to the 2020 census. The main village, home to 965 residents, sits along U.S. Route 302 and the Ammonoosuc River. Each Memorial Day weekend, the town hosts an annual lilac festival that draws visitors to the community.
The town's history reflects the shifting identities of early New Hampshire. First granted in 1763 by Governor Benning Wentworth under the name Concord, it was renamed Chiswick in 1764 and then Gunthwaite in 1768. Governor Levi Woodbury selected the name Lisbon in 1824 when the town was incorporated, inspired by his friend Colonel William Jarvis, who had served as consul at Lisbon, Portugal.
Lisbon's economy was built on natural resources and water power. Charcoal-making was an early industry, and miners extracted iron, gold, and other minerals from local deposits. The Ammonoosuc River's narrow, steep falls powered numerous watermills and factories, most notably the Parker Young Company, which at one time manufactured piano sounding boards for markets worldwide. The town was also the site of New Hampshire's first rope ski tow. Over time, Lisbon's boundaries changed, with portions of the original town eventually becoming Littleton and Sugar Hill. Today, the Lisbon Area Historical Society works to preserve and promote the heritage of Lisbon and its neighboring towns.
