Hanover is a town situated along the Connecticut River in Grafton County, New Hampshire. According to the 2020 census, the town had a population of 11,870 residents, with most living in the Hanover census-designated place, the main village, which recorded 9,078 people. The town also encompasses smaller villages including Etna and Hanover Center and is part of the Lebanon–Claremont micropolitan area.
Chartered by Governor Benning Wentworth on July 4, 1761, Hanover's first European inhabitants arrived between 1765 and 1766, primarily from Connecticut. The town developed as an agricultural community despite its uneven terrain. A pivotal moment in Hanover's history came in 1769 when Dartmouth College was established beside the town common at a location called "the Plain," situated a mile from the Connecticut River and about 150 feet above it. In the 1780s, the southwestern corner of town, known as Dresden, briefly joined Vermont as part of the independent Vermont Republic before returning to New Hampshire at George Washington's insistence. This historical episode left a lasting mark; the Dresden School District, an interstate school district serving both Hanover and Norwich, Vermont, remains one of the nation's few interstate school districts.
