Keizer is a city in Marion County, Oregon, situated along the 45th parallel in the Willamette Valley as part of the Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. With a 2020 population of 39,376, it ranks as Oregon's 14th most populous city. The community bears the name of Thomas Dove Keizur, a pioneer who arrived with the Wagon Train of 1843 and filed donation land claims in the area.
The original settlement developed at Keizer Bottom near the Willamette River's banks, though a significant flood in 1861 forced residents to relocate to higher ground. Additional floods in 1943, 1945, 1946, and 1948 continued to slow the community's development until dams constructed in the 1950s regulated the river's flow, allowing Keizer to expand. When Salem repeatedly attempted annexation, local residents championed incorporation instead. Motivated by Janet and Richard Bauer and their family beginning in 1964, community members advocated for forming an independent city. With support from the nearby unincorporated community of Clear Lake, Keizer was officially incorporated on November 2, 1982.
Today, Keizer lies three miles north of downtown Salem and forty-three miles south of Portland, bordered to the south and east by Salem, with the Willamette River forming its southwestern boundary and the Polk County line.
