Jefferson is a town in Coos County, New Hampshire, nestled in the Israel River valley with a population of 1,043 as of the 2020 census. The town is situated on U.S. Route 2 between Lancaster and Randolph and commands remarkable views of the Presidential Range and other White Mountain summits. It is home to parts of the White Mountain National Forest and to Santa's Village, a Christmas-themed amusement park, along with several private campgrounds, motels, and inns.
The area was first granted to settlers in 1765 by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth, though few took up their claims due to frontier dangers following the French and Indian War. Colonel Joseph Whipple, brother to Declaration of Independence signer William Whipple, developed the settlement and originally named it Dartmouth after the patron of Dartmouth College. The town was renamed Jefferson four years before Thomas Jefferson's election as president, receiving its new charter from the state legislature on December 8, 1796.
Jefferson flourished as a summer resort during the early 1900s, boasting the Waumbek, one of the largest grand hotels in the White Mountains, which could accommodate nearly three hundred guests via its own rail branch connecting to Boston and New York. The town once had over thirty inns and boarding houses. The Waumbek was destroyed by fire on May 9, 1928, and the rise of automobile travel and the Great Depression eventually diminished the resort economy. Historic structures from this era remain, including the Waumbek Cottages Historic District, listed in the National Register of Historic Places in March 2006.
