Colebrook is a town in Coös County, New Hampshire, situated in the Great North Woods Region and bounded on the west by the Connecticut River. Home to Beaver Brook Falls Natural Area, the town had a population of 2,084 at the 2020 census, down from 2,301 in 2010. The main village, where 1,201 people lived in 2020, sits at the junction of U.S. Route 3 and New Hampshire Route 26, while the town also encompasses the villages of Kidderville, Upper Kidderville, and Factory Village. Colebrook is part of the Berlin, New Hampshire micropolitan area.
Originally granted in 1762 and named Dryden after the English poet, the territory was regranted in 1770 and renamed Colebrook Town after Sir George Colebrooke, chairman of the East India Company. Though briefly settled in 1770, the Revolutionary War drove out early inhabitants, and serious settlement resumed only after the war ended. The town was incorporated on June 11, 1796, with a population of 29 recorded in the 1790 census. For many years it served as the shire town of the Northern Judicial District of Coos County.
Colebrook developed as a center of agriculture, manufacturing, and forestry. The area became renowned for farming, and by 1874 it was known as the Potato Capital of New Hampshire, producing over 120,000 bushels annually. A starch industry flourished from 1848 onward, at its peak producing roughly one-third of the state's potato starch. Sawmills and gristmills appeared around 1800, and between 1868 and 1915 the town witnessed major log drives. Tourism emerged early, with the first inn constructed in 1804. The railroad arrived in 1887, connecting Colebrook to larger markets.
