Hines is a city in Harney County, Oregon, with a population of 1,645 according to the 2020 census. The community grew from origins tied to the timber industry. In the early twentieth century, railroad promoter and sawmill operator Fred Herrick founded a lumber company in a community called Herrick, located just southwest of Burns. In 1928, Edward Hines purchased the railroad and lumber company from Herrick, and a post office bearing Hines's name was established in 1931 to serve the Edward Hines Lumber Company mill and the surrounding area. Over the decades, the mill changed hands at least twice more before closing in 2006, marking the end of the industry that shaped the city's identity.
Today, Hines covers 2.13 square miles and maintains a stable population. The city is served by Harney County School District 3, which operates schools in both Hines and the neighboring Burns area. Students attend Hines Middle School in the city itself, while elementary and high school students use facilities in Burns.
