Harper Woods is a city in Wayne County, Michigan, located roughly nine miles northeast of downtown Detroit as an inner-ring suburb. According to the 2020 census, the city had a population of 15,492. The city takes its name from its wooded character and Harper Avenue, its main thoroughfare, which was named for Walter Harper, founder of Harper Hospital in Detroit.
Harper Woods was incorporated as a city on February 19, 1951, emerging from what remained of Gratiot Township. The charter took effect on October 29, 1951, when the first city council was sworn in. As a new municipality, the city immediately confronted typical challenges including schools, streets, sidewalks, water systems, and drains. The suburb's development reflected the broader growth of metropolitan Detroit during the 1950s. In 1955, Interstate 94 was approved to bisect the eastern portion of the suburb, and construction began on the Eastland Shopping Center, which opened in 1957 as one of the first outdoor malls in the Midwest.
