Hale is an unincorporated community located in Plainfield Township in northwestern Iosco County, Michigan, situated in the northeastern Lower Peninsula. The community traces its origins to around 1880, when a lumberman named C.D. Hale traveled from New York State to the area and established a lumber camp on Hale Lake. The settlement grew with the arrival of the railroad, as a flag station on the Detroit, Bay City & Alpena Railroad was established in 1886 and bore the community's name. A post office opened on January 17, 1889, and continues to serve the area today with the ZIP Code 48739. Though the railroad line through the community was removed in 1930, Hale has remained a functioning community. The inaugural Iosco County Fair took place in Hale in 1944 and continues as an annual event hosted there. Today, Hale is served by Hale Area Schools, which operates an elementary, middle, and high school within the community, with teams known as the Eagles. The community is situated about sixteen miles northwest of Tawas City, the county seat, and about twenty-one miles northeast of West Branch. State trunkline highway M-65, known locally as Washington Street, runs north and south through the community.
