East Tawas is a city located in Iosco County in Michigan's Lower Peninsula. With a population of 2,663 residents according to the 2020 census, it is a small but established community with deep roots in the region's industrial past. The city's origins trace back to 1862, when George Smith settled in the area and founded the community to take advantage of the lumber resources that attracted the New York firm Smith, Van Valkenburg, & Company.
