Gold Hill is an unincorporated community in southeastern Rowan County, North Carolina, near the Cabarrus County line and the Yadkin River. First listed as a census-designated place in 2020, it has a population of 372 residents and is accessible by U.S. Highway 52 and Old Beatty Ford Road.
The town's history is deeply rooted in gold mining. Gold was first discovered here in 1824, launching an era of intensive extraction that would yield six million dollars before the Civil War. The discovery was so significant that it led to the establishment of a mint in Charlotte. By 1843, when Gold Hill was incorporated, the community had grown to three thousand people with twenty-three mines operating in the Gold Hill Mining District. The Barnhardt shaft, opened in 1842 and named for Col. George Barnhardt of the Reed Mine family, reached 435 feet deep. The Earnhardt/Randolph Mine, opened a year later across the street, became the deepest gold mine in the United States at 850 feet. Together, these mines were regarded as the richest and most productive gold mines east of the Mississippi. Mining activity declined during the California Gold Rush and Civil War, but revived when London-based investors established The New Gold Hill Mining Company, shipping substantial gold to England between 1880 and 1900. Production ceased by 1915.
Today, Gold Hill celebrates its heritage through tourism and preservation efforts. An informal gathering in 1989 grew into an annual Founders' Day celebration held on the fourth Saturday in September. The Historic Gold Hill and Mines Foundation, established in 1992, has preserved numerous structures including the E.H. Montgomery General Store, Mauney's Store, and historic buildings dating to the 1840s, creating a restored village at Gold Hill Mines Historic Park.
