Cleveland, located in Cleveland Township in Rowan County, North Carolina, is a small town with a population of 846 as of the 2020 census. The community traces its origins to 1831, when a post office was established under the name Cowansville with John Cowan serving as the first postmaster. The town was officially incorporated two years later in 1833. Over the following decades, Cleveland underwent several name changes that reflected local ownership and circumstances. In 1856, prior to the Civil War and before the completion of the Western Carolina Railroad, the town was renamed Rowan Mills after a nearby plantation owned by Osborn Giles Foard, who became the area's postmaster. The name changed once more in 1884 to Third Creek, when the post office was renamed on February 25. Finally, on March 2, 1887, townspeople chose the name Cleveland, reportedly after President Grover Cleveland, who is said to have visited during his presidential campaign. William L. Allison served as the first postmaster under both the Third Creek and Cleveland post office names. Today, Cleveland spans 1.5 square miles and maintains a sister city relationship with Killyleagh in Northern Ireland, a connection established in February 2008.
