Ennis is a small town in southwestern Montana's Madison County, nestled in a landscape shaped by mountains and water. With a population of 917 at the 2020 census, the town has grown steadily from 838 residents in 2010. U.S. Route 287 passes through town, following the Madison River as it flows from the direction of West Yellowstone.
The area's history is rooted in the gold discovery at Alder Gulch in 1863, which sparked a major rush to the region. Two months after that discovery, William Ennis homesteaded land along the Madison River, and the town that grew there took his name. About twelve miles north, Ennis Lake forms behind the Madison Dam at the head of Bear Trap Canyon.
