Cornville is an unincorporated community in Yavapai County, Arizona, situated along Oak Creek, a tributary of the Verde River. As of the 2010 census, the designated community had a population of 3,280. Today, Cornville and its neighboring Page Springs function as bedroom communities for the nearby towns of Sedona and Cottonwood, experiencing rapid suburban growth.
The area has deep historical roots. The Sinagua people settled the Cornville region centuries ago, particularly around the Cornville Bridge on Oak Creek, before disappearing by the early 15th century. When Spanish explorer Antonio de Espejo passed through in May 1583, he found the Yavapai people occupying the land. By the late 1800s, the area was home to Apache and Yavapai peoples, though relations became strained following the 1875 removal of most Native Americans to the San Carlos Reservation.
Anglo settlement began in spring 1876 when Captain Andrew Jackson and his wife Margaret arrived, followed quickly by families including the Dickinsons, Munds, Pages, and others. The Cornville post office was established on May 11, 1887, with Samuel Dickinson serving as its first postmaster. The community's name likely originated from either an early settler or a misreading of paperwork from Washington, though its precise origin remains unclear.
