Comfrey is a small city straddling Brown and Cottonwood counties in southern Minnesota, with a population of 392 at the 2020 census. The majority of residents live in the Brown County portion of the city. Platted in 1902, Comfrey was named after the comfrey plant by its first postmaster, A. W. Pederson. The city's history took a dramatic turn on March 29, 1998, when a powerful F4 tornado struck the community, damaging or destroying most of the town. Though a dozen people were injured, no lives were lost in the disaster. The Comfrey Public School was heavily damaged in the tornado but was rebuilt in 1999 to serve approximately 170 students in grades K-12. Beyond the town itself, Comfrey serves as a gateway to regional attractions including the Jeffers Petroglyphs Historic Site, featuring rock carvings discovered in the 1870s and now preserved by the Minnesota Historical Society. Mound Creek Park, a 316-acre recreational area dedicated in 1993, is located a few miles outside the city. The area has also produced notable figures, including Glen Taylor, a billionaire businessman who was raised on a farm outside Comfrey and went on to own the Minnesota Timberwolves and Minnesota Lynx basketball teams.
