Charlestown, affectionately known as C-Town by locals, sits along the southern coastline of Washington County in Rhode Island. The town is bordered by Westerly to the west, Richmond to the north across the Pawcatuck River, South Kingstown to the east, and the Block Island Sound to the south. European contact in the area dates back to the 1630s, when Col. John Mason marched through during conflict with the Pequots. The town hosts the Narragansett Indian Reservation, recognized by the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs in 1983, encompassing 1,800 acres of trust lands.
