Bradford is a census-designated place spanning portions of Westerly and Hopkinton in Washington County, Rhode Island. As a working-class village in southwest Rhode Island, Bradford has long been shaped by industrial activity. The Bradford Dyeing Association operated there for nearly a century, becoming the largest producer of battle dress uniform fabrics for the U.S. Department of Defense. However, the mill's operations created significant environmental challenges. In violation of federal Clean Air and Clean Water Acts, the facility polluted the Pawcatuck River and degraded local air quality. When state and federal regulators proved unresponsive, the community group Bradford Coalition 2 Stop Pollution worked alongside organizations like the Toxic Action Center, Rhode Island Public Interest Research Group, and Sierra Club to pursue legal action. A civil lawsuit filed in 2005 resulted in a settlement in November of that year, requiring the company to pay $150,000 in fines and implement pollution control improvements including taller smokestacks, soot-reducing devices, and better sewage management. By 2019, the Bradford Dyeing Association had ceased operations and the site was sold.
