Ashaway is an unincorporated village and census-designated place located in the town of Hopkinton in Washington County, Rhode Island. As one of Hopkinton's two principal villages, alongside Hope Valley, Ashaway serves as a smaller but notable community in the region. The name Ashaway carries deep historical roots, deriving from an American Indian name for the river flowing through the village. Originally called the Ashawague or Ashawaug, the river's name translates to "land in the middle" or "land between" in the Niantic and Mohegan languages. This indigenous place name remained in use into the nineteenth century, appearing on historical maps as late as 1832 in the Findley map of Rhode Island.
