Brandywine is an unincorporated area in the southernmost part of Prince George's County, Maryland, situated in the Southern Maryland region. As both a census-designated place and a zip code area, Brandywine straddles a rural landscape while serving as a suburb to both the outer Washington D.C. area and nearby Waldorf in Charles County. The 2020 census recorded a population of 10,550 for the CDP, with the larger zip code area 20613 encompassing parts of both Prince George's and Charles counties.
The community's origins trace back to the mid-nineteenth century when William H. Early named the town after property he owned, likely inspired by the Battle of Brandywine from the American Revolutionary War. Brandywine developed as a railroad town around 1873 along the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad's Southern Maryland line, becoming the only settlement on that route to achieve such status. In 1912, the Bank of Brandywine was established from the earlier Southern Maryland German-American Bank.
For much of its history, Brandywine remained rural despite its location between the substantial cities of Clinton and Waldorf. This character began changing after the turn of the twenty-first century with the arrival of shopping centers and residential developments. Today, the community balances its rural designation with commercial growth, including the Brandywine Crossing shopping center and the Southern Area Aquatics and Recreational Complex.
