Aquasco is an unincorporated census-designated place in southeastern Prince George's County, Maryland, situated in the county's southeastern corner where Maryland Route 381 and Maryland Route 233 intersect. With a population of 913 as of the 2020 census, the community spans 22.1 square miles, bordered to the east by the Patuxent River and surrounding the incorporated town of Eagle Harbor. The name Aquasco derives from the Native American name Aquascake, originating from a tract first surveyed and patented in 1650.
The community developed as an agricultural center focused on tobacco production, with plantations scattered across land between Swanson's Creek and the Patuxent River. Main roads connecting these plantations were established during the eighteenth century, and by the early 1800s, the village of Woodville began to form, named after the Wood family, early settlers of the area. By mid-century, Woodville had developed into a small commercial hub, featuring a grist mill, stores, tavern, blacksmith, school, post office, and both Methodist and Episcopal churches.
The plantation-based economy supported a relatively high slave population in this section of Prince George's County. Following the Civil War, the Freedmen's Bureau established a school at Woodville in 1867. African American residents also had access to religious institutions, including St. Mary's Episcopal Church, established in 1848 as a mission church. Today, Aquasco residents are served by Prince George's County Police Department District 5 Station and the Aquasco Post Office, with school-age children assigned to Baden Elementary School, Gwynn Park Middle School, and Gwynn Park High School.
