Bates is an unincorporated community in Grant County, Oregon, situated at an elevation of 4,062 feet. The community once thrived as a lumber town, reaching a peak population of up to 400 residents. The Oregon Lumber Company operated the Bates mill and townsite until December 30, 1960, when it sold the operation to the Edward Hines Lumber Company. Under Hines's ownership, the mill continued running for another fifteen years before closing in 1975 and being dismantled. The post office, which served the community with ZIP code 97817, closed on January 2, 1976, marking the end of an era for this small mountain settlement.
Today, Bates reflects the character of the high-elevation regions of eastern Oregon.
