Chesterfield is a rural hill town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, located 26 miles east of Pittsfield and part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled in 1760 and officially incorporated two years later, taking its name from the Earl of Chesterfield. Its town center, which developed after the Revolution, features well-preserved Federal period houses along Main Road.
In its early years, Chesterfield's economy centered on agriculture, particularly wool production from Merino sheep. However, the town also operated sawmills, tanneries, and cloth dressing mills. By the early nineteenth century, these industrial operations had become more prominent than farming and attracted a small immigrant population, mostly Irish. As progress swept through the region, most of this industry declined, but by the early twentieth century, a re-emerging agricultural economy developed alongside a growing trade from summer residents who discovered the appeal of this hilltop community.
Today, Chesterfield has a population of 1,186 according to the 2020 census. The town encompasses 31.2 square miles and is part of the Hampshire Regional School District, which serves five communities.
