Wardville is a small unincorporated community in northern Atoka County, Oklahoma, situated along State Highway 131 about 14 miles northeast of Coalgate. The community's origins trace back to February 6, 1902, when a post office was established under the name Herbert in Indian Territory, within the Choctaw Nation. The original postmaster was Henry Pleasant Ward, and the office was named after his youngest son, Herbert Ward. As the territory developed, the community's name changed to Wardville on July 18, 1907, honoring Henry Pleasant Ward himself, a prominent local figure who served in the territorial House of Representatives and Senate and held the position of Atoka County judge. The Wardville Post Office operated for over a century before closing in 2007. Today, Wardville remains a quiet rural community with a population of 53 residents according to the 2020 census. The community is entirely rural and is served by two school districts, Kiowa Public Schools and Coalgate Public Schools. With a median age of 55.2 years and 30.2 percent of residents aged 65 or older, Wardville reflects the characteristics of many small rural Oklahoma communities, where established families have maintained deep roots over generations.
