Crowder is a small town in Pittsburg County, Oklahoma, with a population of 306 residents according to the 2020 census. The community occupies one square mile and is entirely rural in character. The town has roots reaching back to the Indian Territory era, when it was originally located in Tobucksy County of the Choctaw Nation. It was first established as a settlement called Juanita, named after Juanita Harlan Crowder, wife of Dr. W.E. Crowder, an early-day physician in the area. A post office was established at Juanita on March 21, 1902. The town's name was changed to Crowder on June 4, 1904, honoring Dr. Crowder himself. Today, Crowder remains a quiet rural community. The 2020 census showed a median age of 43.5 years, with approximately 22 percent of residents under age eighteen and another 22 percent age sixty-five or older. The majority of households were either married couples or single-parent families, reflecting the composition of many small Oklahoma towns. The community has maintained steady housing stock, with 148 housing units recorded in the 2020 census.
