Townsend is a small town in New Castle County, Delaware, with a population of 2,717 according to the 2020 census. Notably, the geographic center of population of Delaware is located within Townsend. The town was incorporated on April 3, 1885, and takes its name from Samuel John Townsend, a businessman and Delaware Democrat who, along with his brother John, purchased large tracts of farmland in the area between 1845 and 1855. Before its incorporation, the settlement was known as Charley Town. The arrival of the Delaware Railroad in 1856 proved transformative for the community, bisecting Samuel Townsend's property and establishing a railroad station that became the area's principal shipping point for agricultural goods. A post office was established in September 1856, followed by the town's first hotel in 1857. The peach industry became vital to local prosperity until disease devastated Delmarva orchards in the late nineteenth century. By the mid-nineteenth century, a free African American community had also established itself in Townsend. The town boasts significant historical character, with the Townsend Historic District, encompassing 216 buildings, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. Today, Townsend remains a rural community, with all residents living in rural areas as of the 2020 census. The town lies along Delaware Route 71 and serves as a junction for two railroad lines, maintaining its historical connection to transportation and commerce.
