Topton is an unincorporated community in Cherokee County, North Carolina, situated at the convergence of U.S. Routes 19, 74, and 129, approximately seven and a half miles east-northeast of Andrews. The community's name comes from David Samuel Russell, who arrived in the area around 1885 when railroad executive Alexander Boyd Andrews assigned him to manage a commissary store at Red Marble Gap following the railroad's expansion into the region. The establishment of Topton's post office on December 12, 1887, marked an important milestone in the young community's development. Russell served as the first postmaster for two years before moving on to become the first mayor of nearby Andrews. Today, Topton carries the ZIP code 28781. Over the decades, the community has continued to grow and serve its residents. A fire station was constructed around 1975, followed by a community center built in 1976. More recently, the Nantahala Community Library and Community Center opened on July 22, 2024, located next to Nantahala School. The library, which had previously occupied a modular building at the school, is now part of the Fontana Regional Library system, providing expanded resources and services to the Topton area.
