Tarboro is the county seat of Edgecombe County and part of the Rocky Mount metropolitan area, with a 2020 census population of 10,721. Located near the western edge of North Carolina's coastal plain on the Tar River, the town was chartered in 1760, making it the ninth-oldest incorporated town in the state. The name derives from "Taw," the Tuscaroran word for "river of health," though settlers had already begun establishing a community by the 1730s. The town's layout, established by commissioners in 1760, featured streets eighty feet wide crossing at right angles and lots not exceeding half an acre. By the early 1800s, it had grown to include about fifty private houses, numerous stores, and public buildings including a courthouse and jail. President George Washington visited Tarboro during his 1791 Southern tour and praised the town's welcome.
