Rocky Mount is a city straddling Nash and Edgecombe counties in North Carolina, with a population of 54,341 according to the 2020 census, making it the state's twentieth-most populous city. It serves as the principal city of the Rocky Mount metropolitan area, known as the Twin Counties, with an estimated 2023 population of 145,383.
The region around the Tar River was home to indigenous peoples for twelve thousand years, including the Tuscarora, who spoke an Iroquoian language. English and Scots traders began arriving in the mid-1700s. The area's position along the falls of the Tar River made it ideal for mills and settlement. The Falls of the Tar River Primitive Baptist Church, established in 1757, became the community's center. A post office was established in 1816, and Rocky Mount Mills, the state's second cotton mill, was built in 1818 by Joel Battle and other entrepreneurs.
The Wilmington and Weldon Railroad reached Rocky Mount on Christmas Eve in 1839, connecting the town to major ports and spurring growth. In 1867, the village was incorporated as a town. Following the Civil War, the mill was rebuilt, and tobacco became the primary agricultural product, eventually surpassing cotton. The social life of the era was shaped by tobacco warehouses that hosted community dances called june germans beginning in the 1880s.
At the turn of the twentieth century, Rocky Mount became the northern headquarters of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. With a population near seven thousand five hundred, it was officially incorporated as a city in 1907. The city has since diversified its economy into biomedical pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, and logistics, earning the All-America City Award twice, in 1969 and 1999.
