The name Tamassee itself comes from a Cherokee word meaning "Place of the Sunlight of God," given to a Cherokee village that once thrived here. Local legend tells of a powerful Cherokee prophet who lived in the village. This peaceful settlement was destroyed on August 12, 1776, during the Ring Fight, when Major Andrew Pickens led a scouting detachment that was ambushed by a larger force of Cherokees and Loyalists. Through tactical formations and quick thinking, Pickens's militia held their ground and eventually prevailed, with reinforcements arriving to drive the Cherokee from Tamassee Town. A South Carolina state historical marker in the Cheohee Valley commemorates this Cherokee village.
