Sutton is a town located in northern Caledonia County, Vermont, with a population of 913 at the 2020 census. The town was chartered on February 26, 1782, by the Vermont Legislature under the name Billymead, granted to Dr. Jonathan Arnold of Rhode Island and his associates and named after Arnold's younger son, William. However, by 1810, the townspeople had grown weary of Billy's bullying and drunken behavior and voted overwhelmingly at a town meeting to change the town's name to Sutton. Today the town encompasses three villages and hamlets: Sutton, Sutton Depot, and Summit Siding.
Sutton covers a total area of 38.4 square miles and is bordered by seven neighboring towns including Lyndon, Wheelock, Sheffield, Barton, Westmore, Newark, and Burke. The town's highest point is Mount Hor, located in the northern corner with an elevation of 2,656 feet above sea level. This elevation contributes to a slightly cooler and wetter climate compared to nearby towns, with annual snowfall averaging well over 100 inches per year. The town experiences a humid continental climate characterized by warm summers with cool nights and very cold, snowy winters.
