Stanfield is a small city in Umatilla County, Oregon, located within the Pendleton–Hermiston Micropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 2,144 residents spread across 1.53 square miles.
The area has deep roots in Oregon's development. Originally named Foster after John R. Foster of Portland, an associate of the firm Allen & Lewis, the location began when the company purchased four thousand acres northeast of Echo and established a large ranch along with a store and small community. When the Oregon Railway & Navigation Company established a siding and stop there in 1882, it carried the Foster name. A post office opened in 1883 under the same name, but in 1909 the community was renamed Stanfield in honor of Robert N. Stanfield Jr., who would later become a U.S. senator from Oregon.
Today, Stanfield remains a rural community with strong family ties. According to the 2020 census, the median age was 35.9 years, with roughly one quarter of residents under eighteen. The majority of the city's 772 households were owner-occupied, and nearly forty percent included children under eighteen. The community reflects Oregon's agricultural heritage and continues to serve as part of the broader Umatilla County region.
