Echo is a small city in Umatilla County, Oregon, located in the northeastern part of the state along the Umatilla River. As of the 2020 census, Echo had a population of 632 residents and is part of the Pendleton–Hermiston Micropolitan Statistical Area. The city sits approximately eight miles south of Hermiston and twenty miles west of Pendleton, situated about a mile south of Interstate 84 and U.S. Route 395.
Echo's history is deeply connected to pioneer settlement and transportation. The original Oregon Trail passed just south of the area, but when the Columbia Plateau Route opened in 1847, it ran directly through Echo, crossing the Umatilla River and eventually becoming the primary trail route. Pioneers frequently stopped at Lower Crossing Camp in Echo during their westward journeys. In the 1860s, settlers began establishing themselves in the area and constructed a ferry crossing the Umatilla River. Agriculture became the area's first economic driver, with alfalfa and corn as primary crops. The city was platted by 1880 and was named after Echo Koontz, daughter of Cynthia and J. H. Koontz. The Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company built a railroad through Echo by 1883, transforming the town into a shipping point for wool, cattle, and sheep during the early 1900s. Echo was incorporated in 1904.
The city experiences a semi-arid climate and offers residents and visitors access to parks and recreation, including the Oregon Trail Arboretum and Fort Henrietta Park.
