South Bound Brook is a small borough in Somerset County, New Jersey, with a population of 4,863 according to the 2020 census. The area was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans before European settlement began in 1681 near the Bound Brook stream, which gives the borough its name. Originally part of Franklin Township, the community was briefly called Bloomington from 1869 until 1891, when it reverted to South Bound Brook. The borough was officially incorporated as an independent municipality on April 11, 1907.
The area's early character reflected its Dutch heritage, with apple and peach orchards dotting the landscape. During the American Revolutionary War, the Abraham Staats House, built around 1740, served as headquarters for Baron Von Steuben. Now acquired by the borough and placed on the New Jersey and National Registers in 2002, it operates as a museum maintained by the Friends of Abraham Staats House. The historic Queen's Bridge over the Raritan River, erected by 1761, played a pivotal role during the war, including the Battle of Bound Brook on April 13, 1777. The bridge has been rebuilt multiple times, most recently renovated and paved in 2007.
The Reformed Church, constructed in 1848 on Main Street, remains a local historical site.
