Bound Brook is a borough in Somerset County, New Jersey, situated along the Raritan River. The area was first settled in 1681, with the community establishing itself near the Bound Brook stream, which flows into the Raritan River and provided the borough's name after being mentioned as a boundary in a Native American deed. Originally incorporated as a town on March 24, 1869, within portions of Bridgewater Township, Bound Brook was reincorporated as a borough on February 11, 1891, following a referendum.
The borough played a notable role during the American Revolutionary War. A wooden bridge over the Raritan River, erected by 1761 and named Queen's Bridge in 1767, saw action during the Battle of Bound Brook on April 13, 1777, which resulted in a Continental Army defeat. The bridge underwent several transformations, becoming a covered bridge before being replaced by a steel pipe truss bridge in 1875, then a steel girder bridge in 1984. It was renovated and repaved in 2007.
Bound Brook experienced a significant industrial tragedy on April 22, 1921, when a faulty valve at a paint factory released a cloud of phosgene gas over the city in early morning hours, injuring over 100 people and killing one. The intervention of four people prevented further gas escape.
As of the 2020 census, Bound Brook had a population of 11,988, reflecting steady growth over two decades. The borough covers 1.70 square miles and borders Bridgewater Township, South Bound Brook in Somerset County, and Middlesex Borough in Middlesex County.
