Shelton is a village located in Buffalo and Hall counties in Nebraska, situated west of Grand Island along the Union Pacific Railroad and U.S. Route 30. As of the 2020 census, the community had a population of 1,034 residents. The village is part of the Kearney Micropolitan Statistical Area and covers 0.73 square miles, with its downtown business district positioned near the banks of the Wood River.
The area's history stretches back to 1858 when Joseph Johnson, a Mormon settler, established the first European settlement. Johnson's operation, known as Johnson's Ranche, served as a vital supply point for Mormons and travelers on the Council Bluffs Road, offering a store, blacksmith shop, wagon repair services, bakery, and printing office. In April 1860, Johnson established the Huntsman's Echo, the first newspaper published west of Omaha. The Great Western Stage Company later opened a stage station there in 1860 to serve its Fort Kearny route.
The Union Pacific Railroad arrived in 1866, spurring growth and settlement. The community was originally named Wood River Centre but was renamed Shelton on February 3, 1873, at the request of postman Patrick Walsh, who sought to avoid confusion with another nearby community. The name honors Nathan Shelton, an auditor for the Union Pacific Railroad. The village was officially incorporated in 1882. Notably, Shelton established the first schoolhouse in Buffalo County as early as 1866, and later received funding for a Carnegie Library building in 1913. The population has remained relatively stable throughout its history, consistently hovering around one thousand residents.
