Selman is an unincorporated community in Harper County, Oklahoma, situated about eight miles east-southeast of Buffalo, the county seat. The town began when J. B. Fesler's original homestead was purchased by J. O. Selman, who then sold it to a townsite company. The company platted the land and named it in Selman's honor. The first official auction of town lots took place in late April 1920, though some purchases and construction had already occurred. As a wheat-growing area, Selman quickly developed rail connections to Buffalo to facilitate the transport of grain to market. When the community was organized, the post office was relocated from Charleston, Oklahoma, and initially retained that name until September 21, 1923, when it became the Selman post office.
During the 1920s, Selman thrived as a small commercial center, boasting a two-story school, a Methodist Episcopal Church, two grocery stores, a creamery, a café, a lumber and supply business, a variety store, a hotel, and a bank. However, the town's fortunes changed significantly over the decades. Today, no rail lines remain in Harper County, and Selman sits removed from major highways, accessible only by N1980 Road south of US Route 64. The community has contracted considerably, with a 2020 census population of just twelve residents. Current school services are consolidated in Buffalo and Laverne, reflecting the dramatic shifts in Harper County's settlement patterns and economy since Selman's prosperous early years.
