May is a small town in Harper County, Oklahoma, located along U.S. Highway 412 approximately 26 miles northwest of Woodward. The community began when a store was established at the site in 1893 following the Cherokee Outlet Opening. A post office opened in July 1896, and the town was officially platted in July 1902, though formal incorporation did not occur until November 1913. May experienced significant growth in spring 1912 when the Wichita Falls and Northwestern Railway was constructed through the town, establishing it as an important wheat-shipping point. However, like many rural communities dependent on rail transport, May declined substantially after World War II. The rail line was abandoned in 1972, marking the end of an era for the town's economy. Today, May is a very small community, with a population of 29 according to the 2020 census. The town covers just 0.2 square miles and remains entirely rural.
