Scottsbluff is the largest city in the Nebraska Panhandle and the thirteenth-most-populous city in the state, with a population of 14,436 at the 2020 census. The city was founded in 1899 by the Lincoln Land Company, a subsidiary of the Burlington Railroad, and quickly became the region's economic center when railroad tracks arrived by 1900. As the first town in the area to be located along a railroad line, Scottsbluff drew businesses and residents away from the nearby town of Gering, which had been founded twelve years earlier to the south. Today, the two communities have grown together to form Nebraska's seventh-largest urban area.
The city takes its name from Scotts Bluff, a distinctive landmark now protected as Scotts Bluff National Monument by the National Park Service. The bluff was named after Hiram Scott, a fur trader with the Rocky Mountain Fur Company who was found dead in the vicinity during the return journey from a fur expedition. Scottsbluff itself covers 6.27 square miles and experiences a cold semi-arid climate with wide temperature swings. The area sees hot summers and cold, dry winters, though chinook winds periodically bring relief. Record temperatures have ranged from 110 degrees Fahrenheit in July 1939 to minus 46 degrees in February 1899. Precipitation concentrates in spring and summer months, with May and June averaging over two inches.
