Mitchell, a city in Scotts Bluff County, Nebraska, was established in 1900 when the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad extended its line westward to the area. The city takes its name from the nearby historic Fort Mitchell, which was named after General Robert B. Mitchell, a brigadier general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Mitchell was officially incorporated as a city in 1902. Located northwest of Scottsbluff, Mitchell covers 0.67 square miles and is part of the Scottsbluff Micropolitan Statistical Area. According to the 2020 census, the city had a population of 1,548 residents. The community is home to Mitchell Public Schools, which operates two schools serving the area. Mitchell has long been a gathering place for the region, hosting the Scotts Bluff County Fair each year, an event first organized in 1887 that features a pageant, musical entertainment, livestock shows, and circus entertainment. For recreation, residents and visitors can enjoy the Scenic Knolls Golf Course, a nine-hole course that opened in 1993, as well as a public swimming pool.
