Sauk Rapids is a city in Benton County, Minnesota, located on a set of rapids on the Mississippi River near its confluence with the Sauk River. With a 2020 census population of 13,862, it represents about a third of Benton County's population and is part of the St. Cloud metropolitan area. The city began as a forested landscape until the first home, a mansion called Lynden Terrace, was built in 1851 by W.H. Wood. Named for the rapids below the Sauk River's mouth, Sauk Rapids quickly developed as settlers arrived and established a general store, hotel, church, and in 1854, the Sauk Rapids Frontiersman, the first newspaper published outside of St. Paul. A flour mill constructed in 1875 and the first bridge built in 1876 supported the growing community. By 1874, the railroad reached Sauk Rapids, making it a shipping hub for produce from across the region. The city's prosperity was tragically interrupted on April 14, 1886, when a tornado struck at approximately four o'clock in the afternoon, destroying the commercial center and killing forty-four people with several hundred injured. Though the county seat later moved to Foley in 1897, Sauk Rapids continued as an important community. Modern development includes the Sauk Rapids Regional Bridge, completed in 2007, which linked to 2nd Street and prompted reconstruction efforts including cobblestone sidewalks and granite median improvements.
