Rice is a city in Benton County, Minnesota, with a population of 1,975 as of the 2020 census. The community is part of the St. Cloud Metropolitan Statistical Area and has a rich history rooted in the region's transformation from Ojibwe territory to a settled farming community. Originally called Sand Prairie, the area saw its first European settlers arrive in the autumn of 1844. The village itself was named after George T. Rice, a Massachusetts-born hotelier and mill owner who migrated to the nearby village of Langola in 1864 to develop the area. In 1877, the Northern Pacific Railroad came through, and George T. Rice hired F.W. Earl to construct the Luther hotel. Rice was officially incorporated on July 18, 1890, as a farming community within Benton County. The city's history includes survival of the devastating Sauk Rapids Tornado on April 14, 1886, which remains the deadliest tornado in Minnesota's history.
Today, Rice thrives as a family-friendly community. The terrain is largely sandy and flat, historically prairie grassland and oak savannah, now dotted with pine and poplar trees interspersed among irrigated farm fields. Recreation opportunities abound, from fishing and boating on Little Rock Lake at Benton Beach to disc golf courses and an eighteen-hole golf course. The community hosts numerous festivals throughout the year, including Summerfest in June and Rice Fun Day in August.
