Saint George is a small town located in Dorchester County, South Carolina, situated near the crossing of Interstate 26 and Interstate 95. Incorporated by the South Carolina Legislature on January 28, 1875, Saint George has served as the county seat since Dorchester County was formed from Colleton County in 1897. The town covers 2.7 square miles and, according to the 2020 census, has a population of 1,843 residents.
The community's history is closely tied to transportation and industry. Saint George grew along the South Carolina Canal and Railroad Company, one of the first railroads built in the United States and notably the first to offer scheduled passenger trains powered by steam locomotives. The town's cultural heritage is reflected in several historic sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the 1970s, including Appleby's Methodist Church, Carroll Place, and Indian Fields Methodist Campground.
Today, Saint George is perhaps best known for its World Grits Festival, a celebration born from a local discovery.
