Dorchester was a colonial town in South Carolina, situated on the Ashley River about eighteen miles from Charleston. Founded in February 1696 by followers of Reverend Joseph Lord from Dorchester, Massachusetts, the settlement carried the name of their home colony, which itself had been named after the English town Dorchester. The settlers had received permission to emigrate in October 1695, and after a harrowing voyage marked by a severe storm, they arrived in Charles Town on December 20, 1695. They established their community on land that had originally been granted to wealthy Englishman John Smith in 1676, situated near the mouths of Dorchester Creek and Eagle's Creek where they met the Ashley River. The Native Americans of the region had called this land Boo-shoo-ee, a name whose meaning remains unknown, though its suffix likely referred to water. The colonists first built crude wooden shelters, then prioritized constructing a church they named the Old White Meeting House. They developed their town following the architectural and social styles familiar from England and Massachusetts. Over time, however, the settlement declined. Reverend Lord returned to Massachusetts in 1720, and the residents struggled with the unfamiliar hot climate and local diseases such as malaria. Insufficient natural resources made sustaining a large population difficult. By 1751, the townspeople had abandoned Dorchester entirely, with most resettling at Midway in Georgia, while others relocated to North Carolina or Massachusetts. The ruins of the Old White Meeting House and its cemetery remain, now maintained by Summerville Presbyterian Church.
