Powell is an unincorporated community located in eastern McDonald County, Missouri, situated on Big Sugar Creek approximately ten miles east of Pineville along Missouri Supplemental Route E. Today the community includes homes, a few businesses, and a post office, and it is part of the Fayetteville–Springdale–Rogers Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Powell was once a thriving hub with multiple general stores, a blacksmith, a gas station, several churches, and a watermill. While many of those establishments have closed, some structures from that era remain. One of the original general store buildings still stands and operates occasionally. Most notably, the Albert E. Brumley and Sons/Hartford Music Company has called Powell home since the 1940s. This hymn and songbook publishing operation was founded by gospel composer Albert E. Brumley and later run by his son Robert until Robert's death in late 2020. Albert E. Brumley's composition "I'll Fly Away" became one of the most recorded gospel songs, performed by multiple Grammy Award-winning musicians and even inspiring a television series. Brumley and his wife, Goldie Schell, are buried in Fox Cemetery near the community.
The 1915 Powell Bridge, a historic pin-connected Pratt through truss bridge located 0.4 mile southwest of the community, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. Though a new bridge now handles vehicle traffic, the original structure serves pedestrians. Several older buildings remain in Powell, including the First Baptist Church building, the Hill and Hollow exhibit hall, and an abandoned gas station, standing as reminders of the community's once-vibrant past.
