Noel is a city situated on the Elk River in McDonald County in southwestern Missouri, just three miles north of the Arkansas border. With a population of 2,124 as of the 2020 census, the city has grown steadily from 1,832 residents in 2010. The community was founded after the Kansas City, Pittsburg, and Gulf Railroad arrived and was named for brothers Clark Wallace and William Jasper Noel, who were stockmen and owners of a sawmill. A post office has operated in Noel since 1886.
The town has become known as "The Christmas City in the Ozark Vacation Land," capitalizing on its festive name. Each year during the holiday season, tens of thousands of Christmas cards and letters arrive at the Noel Post Office to receive its distinctive postmark. This tradition gained prominence in the late 1940s when radio and television singer Kate Smith began broadcasting the "Noel Story" to her audiences. Interestingly, most area residents pronounce the town's name to rhyme with "mole," honoring the original Noel brothers.
In more recent decades, Noel became home to a Tyson Foods chicken-processing plant, which drew many refugee workers to the community. By 2010, several hundred Somali and Sudanese refugees had settled in Noel. This demographic shift led to the establishment of a mosque in 2009 and an African grocery store in 2010, both located on Main Street. A significant fire in December 2020 destroyed the African grocery store and damaged the mosque, but the Islamic Society of Joplin successfully raised over $100,000 to help rebuild.
