Portsmouth, located in Newport County, Rhode Island, is the second-oldest municipality in the state, after Providence. Settled in 1638 by religious dissenters from Massachusetts Bay Colony including Dr. John Clarke, William Coddington, and Anne Hutchinson, the town was originally named Pocasset before being officially renamed Portsmouth on May 12, 1639, after Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. Roger Williams played a key role in directing the settlers to Rhode Island rather than their initially planned destination in New Jersey. Portsmouth was one of four colonies that merged to form the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, alongside Providence, Newport, and Warwick, eventually becoming part of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.
