Port Edwards began as a small settlement known as Frenchtown, built around a sawmill constructed around 1829. The village was renamed in 1869 to honor John Edwards, a local mill owner who had become instrumental in the community's development. Edwards and his partner Henry Clinton acquired the mill in 1840, and over time Edwards gained full ownership, establishing the prosperous John Edwards and Company by 1862. In the 1860s, the settlement remained modest, consisting of a store, blacksmith shop, school, two boarding houses, and scattered residences. Edwards' success led him to run for the Wisconsin legislature, and after his election in 1890, he relocated to Madison, leaving management to his son-in-law Lewis M. Alexander. As central Wisconsin's sawmill industry declined by the century's end, Alexander made a pivotal decision to convert the operation into a paper mill, completing the transformation in 1896. Though economically challenging at first, the company eventually succeeded despite fluctuations tied to broader economic conditions. Port Edwards incorporated as a village in 1902 and grew slowly, becoming dependent on the mill for its economy. The village preserves homes from the 1890s through 1940s era, and its high school was named in honor of John Edwards. The mill, which had defined the community for over a century, closed in 2008. Today Port Edwards has a population of 1,762 according to the 2020 census.
