Nekoosa, a city in Wood County, Wisconsin, takes its name from the Ho-Chunk word meaning "running water," reflecting the area's geographic character shaped by the Wisconsin River. Today the city has a population of 2,449 according to the 2020 census. The area's history is deeply rooted in this waterway and its industrial potential. Originally known as Point Basse, the settlement grew around Wakeley's tavern, which served as a gathering place for river travelers and lumber raftsmen during the era when lumber was rafted down the river to Mississippi River markets. In 1831, Daniel Whitney built the first sawmill on the Wisconsin River at Whitney's Rapids, making Nekoosa the birthplace of Wood County. The harnessing of the river's power led to the development of numerous facilities that would eventually make the Wisconsin River the hardest worked river in the world. The Nekoosa Paper Company, incorporated in 1893, became the foundation of the city's modern economy. The company's innovative paper machine was first displayed at the 1893 Columbian Exhibition before later relocating to a sister mill in Port Edwards. Through various mergers and acquisitions, the mill operation became integral to Nekoosa's identity, passing through the hands of NEPCO, Great Northern Nekoosa Corporation, Georgia-Pacific, and finally the Canadian company Domtar in 2001.
