Pocomoke City, known as "the friendliest town on the Eastern Shore," is located in Worcester County, Maryland, with a population of 4,295 according to the 2020 census. The city's name comes from the Pocomoke River, an American Indian term meaning "black water." Originally settled in the late seventeenth century as Stevens Landing, the community was incorporated as Newtown in 1865 before being reincorporated as Pocomoke City in 1878 during a period of civic enthusiasm.
The construction of a major railroad line through town during the 1880s, eventually becoming part of the Pennsylvania Railroad, transformed Pocomoke City from a modest river crossing into a growing center of commerce. Early industries included lumber milling, shipbuilding, and later barrel and basket manufacturing alongside agricultural processing. A devastating fire destroyed the business district in 1922, though the downtown was quickly rebuilt. As truck farming declined in the twentieth century, the poultry industry became increasingly important to the local economy.
Today, Pocomoke City serves as a commercial hub for the lower shore, home to an industrial park featuring defense contractors, aerospace engineering, and plastics fabrication.
